The song ‘Till it happens to you’, a tribute to the courage of survivors of sexual assault, recently received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Grammy Award winners Lady Gaga and Diane Warren collaborated on the song, which was released in September 2015. It comes from the documentary film THE HUNTING GROUND, written by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering. It premiered in the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and brings to light the prevalence of sexual assault occurring in College Campuses across the US. “After watching THE HUNTING GROUND, I was inspired by the survivors who had the courage to tell their stories” (Warren). Alarming numbers of students are affected by sexual assault, which is highlighted at the end of the video. ‘1 in 5 college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes.’
Lady Gaga also championed the cause of survivors by dedicating her nomination in their honor. “This nomination lends a voice to so many victims and their families around the world” (Gaga). A portion of the profits made from the song sales will go towards supporting survivors of sexual assault.

‘Till It Happens To You’
Till it happens to you, you don’t know how it feels, how it feels
Till it happens to you, you won’t know, it won’t be real
Till your world burns and crashes
Till you’re at the end, the end of your rope
Till you’re standing in my shoes
